ISSUE AND BACKGROUND

 

The AAU Junior Olympic Games took place August 5-8 in Satellite, Florida with five Smyrna athletes from the Smyrna Elite Track Club competing.

 

The Smyrna Elite Track Club is based out of Smyrna and Campbell High School and has been in operation for a little over six years under head coaches AJ Davis and Todd Schusterman

 

During their last five seasons, the program has produced multiple All Americans, Junior Olympic Qualifiers, State Champions and State Qualifiers, but this is the first season the club has brought back National Junior Olympic Titles to Smyrna.  Last week, FIVE athletes, all Smyrna residents, represented the City well with THREE of the athletes bringing back FOUR National Junior Olympic Titles, and all FIVE becoming AAU All Americans!

**AAU Junior Olympic Champion - Girls 14-years old 100m Dash

**Silver Medalist in the Girls 14 years old 200 Meter Hurdles

**Bronze Medalist in the Girls 14 years old 100 Meter Hurdles

 

Leighla-Rachelle G. Herriott (8 yrs old; entering 3rd grade)

**National Champion in the Girls 8 and under 400m Dash

**Silver Medalist in the Girls 8 and under 200m Dash

**Bronze Medalist in the Girls 8 and under 100m Dash

 

Matthew Fernando (17 yrs old; entering 11th grade)

AAU Junior Olympic Champion in the Mens 17-18 years old 1500m Run

 

Doyle Morrison, Jr. (10 yrs old; entering 5th grade)

Placed 4th Nationally in the 10 years old 400m Dash (All-American)

 

Roger (RJ) Baker, Jr. (9 yrs old; entering 4th grade)

Placed 5th Nationally in the 9 years old 1500m Run (All-American)
