ISSUE AND BACKGROUND:
Certification status represents a significant professional achievement for the police department. Certification acknowledges the implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures conceptually sound and operationally effective. External assessors conducted an on-site March 2-3, 2022, to confirm the police department’s compliance with standards formulated to represent best practices in law enforcement. Achieving State Certification requires a great deal of effort and commitment to a complex task, which requires compliance with a solid and complete set of policies that cover all the areas found in the standards.

In 2006, the GACP partnered with the Georgia Interlocal Risk Management Agency (GIRMS) to provide special rate reduction incentives to municipalities that achieve and maintain their State Certification status. These rate reductions can decrease liability premiums by 20 percent. Due to this award of re-certification, the Smyrna Police Department will continue to receive discounted rates from GIRMA.

Achieving and maintaining high standards makes the Smyrna Police Department more professional and provides the basis for the department to be recognized as a role model through the award of State Certification. This achievement is confirmation the department’s practices are consistent with progressive, professional standards.
