ISSUE: Proposals were sought for RFID products consisting of hardware, software, shipping, installation, training, project management, and ongoing maintenance and enhancements. Proposals had to incorporate specifications to include the library's existing PCs, self-service stations and network to operate in conjunction with the vendor's software. Six (6) vendors requested the RFP documents and one (1) response was received.
BACKGROUND: The library's RFID installation project is in its second year. The first year included the installation of three self-service stations. Currently, customers utilize the existing library barcodes to check out materials, but the self-check units are RFID ready. This second phase of the project will include the tagging of all physical circulating library materials with RFID tags, and the installation of new security gates, a staff tagging station, and staff check-in stations. The inclusion of RFID technology into library processes will increase speed of check-in and check-out of materials, improve security, and provide a more accurate inventory of collections.

RECOMMENDATION/REQUESTED ACTION: The one response to the City of Smyrna's RFP was Envisionware, Inc. Smyrna Library installed three self-service units by Envisionware last fiscal year, so the RFID software by the same vendor will work seamlessly with the library's network and hardware.
