Title

Approval to reclassify a Police Major position to a Police Deputy Chief position

Body

ISSUE: The need to progress with the Stratified Model of Policing along with additional department goals which have evolved over the past four years, the need for a second Police Deputy Chief has arisen.  In keeping with an effective and efficient span of control, a second Deputy Chief would allow the segregation of duties among these two positions to allow more projects and programs to by undertaken.

BACKGROUND:  Throughout the Metro Atlanta area (City of Suwanee, City of Brookhaven, City of Sandy Springs, City of Marietta to name a few) departments have realized the effectiveness of two Deputy Chiefs and the impact these positions have on their operations.  Due to the full service nature of the City of Smyrna Police Department (Jail, E-911, and Policing functions) and an overall evaluation of the operations holistically, the need for this second position has become necessary.  With the announced retirement of a Police Major effective april 24, 2017, this opportunity has presented itself.

RECOMMENDATION/REQUESTED ACTION:  The Chief of Police and current Deputy Police Chief recommends this approval.
