Title

Approval of Ordinance 2018-05 amending the City of Smyrna Code of Ordinances relating to community redevelopment tax incentives; repealing conflicting ordinances; establishing an effective date; and for other purposes.

Body

ISSUE:

The ordinance would create a community redevelopment tax incentive program that would authorize the City of Smyrna to levy a financial punishment upon property owners that maintain a property in a blighted condition.

BACKGROUND

The City of Smyrna wishes to adopt this ordinance in coordination with the new code passed in 2017 by Cobb County that created a community redevelopment tax incentive program. Similar municipal code changes were recently adopted by Powder Springs.

This program is designed to provide a means for encouraging property owners that are maintaining a property in a blighted condition to make the necessary changes to bring the property up to code and requisite safety standards.
