Title

Approval of Resolution 2018-07 to collect prepaid wireless 911 surcharges in the amount of $1.50 per retail transaction and as outlined in O.C.G.A. 46-5-134.2(b)(1)

Body

ISSUE:  The law regarding 911 charges was substantially altered through Ga.L.2018, p.689, HB75 and authorizes local jurisdictions to impose prepaid wireless surcharges of $1.50 per retail transactions occurring within the jurisdiction of the public safety answering point.  All revenue will be remitted to the Georgia Department of Revenue as the centralized collection point and distributed to the jurisdiction within which the surcharges were collected.

BACKGROUND:  Historically, the prepaid wireless 911 surcharges were paid at $.75 per transaction.  With the changes in State law and the formation of the Stae's 911 Authority, state law authorized jurisdictions with public safety answering points to increase prepaid wireless 911 fees to $1.50 per retail transaction to create parity among all billable lines.

RECOMMENDATION/REQUESTED ACTION:  Approval of Resolution 2018-07 for increasing the prepaid wireless 911 surcharge
