ISSUE:
Requested street closings are to create a safe pedestrian environment for residents and visitors to enjoy the Downtown Smyrna Streets Alive event in the Smyrna Market Village and for residents to be able to move comfortably around the area to patronize local businesses and interact with their neighbors without concerns about pedestrian safety due to vehicle traffic.

The event is passive in nature, meaning that there is no structured activity or entertainment planned beyond providing a community space for residents to enjoy the City's beautiful downtown. Several communities in the Metro Region hold similar events to this on a particular day of each month in their downtown, seeking to encourage more foot traffic for local businesses and to promote social networking between residents that strengthens community ties.

The City of Smyrna has held one Smyrna Streets Alive event previously which took place in October 2018. It was well attended and took place in a more residential area so this event is moving the focal point of the event into the downtown business area to support our local commerce and enjoy the amenities of Downtown Smyrna and the Smyrna Market Village. Residents can utilize the multi-purpose Rail-to-River Trail which runs adjacent to the Smyrna Market Village.

The Smyrna Market Village, the Village Green Circle in front of the Community Center and Library, and the Arboretum, are all within the approved Restaurant District, allowing for adults over the legal drinking age of 21 to carry out their alcoholic beverages purchased from businesses within the Smy...
