Approval of Ordinance ORD2020-06, an amendment to the Code of Ordinances of the City of Smyrna, Georgia by adopting a new article 2, "Unlawful Discrimination" in Chapter 66, "Offenses and Miscellaneous Provisions" and for all other lawful purposes.

ISSUE AND BACKGROUND:
This ordinance is designed to further our policy of protecting the rights of all people to be free from discrimination or interference with their established civil rights. The final version has come from a process after receiving substantial community input. In addition to receiving community input through the traditional means, a town hall meeting was held on July 14, 2020 where additional public comment was received both in person and via telephone. The ordinance was modified several times after considering other ordinances and receiving this community input. The ordinance prohibits discrimination and interference with a person’s established civil rights and provides an opportunity for reconciliation where either are alleged to have occurred. Should reconciliation prove unsuccessful, violations would be addressed in municipal court in the same manner as other ordinance violations.
